Apply for a Home

Qualifying for a Home
Anyone who wishes to apply for a Habitat Home must attend a Habitat for Humanity Town Hall meeting. These meetings are usually once or twice a year and are announced through print, radio and television announcements. Those interested in attending a meeting can also call our local offices to be put on a list of those wanting to be contacted with meeting information. No one is placed on a waiting list.
We will only accept the number of families that we have property available to build homes.

Anyone who is interested in a home can attend the meeting, some of the most important aspects of qualifying for a home are:
  • You must live in sub-standard or crowded conditions.
  • You will need to meet certain income requirements.
  • You must be willing to partner with Habitat in building your home, which involves sweat equity hours.
  • You must be able to pay back the mortgage.
At the Town Hall Meeting you will:
  • Learn about the program.
  • Receive an application.
After the Town Hall Meeting you must:
  • Return the application by assigned date.
  • Plan on a 30-90 day waiting period for applications to be reviewed by Selection Committee.
  • If you are selected, your home could take 6 - 8 months to complete.

In order to qualify, potential families are considered based on the following three points.

NEED FOR HOUSING:
  • Overcrowded housing i.e. more than two children per room, adults sharing room with children, children of opposite sex sharing a room.
  • Substandard housing: Problems with maintenance and repairs.
  • Resident of public housing.
  • Unable to secure adequate housing through the private market.
  • Desire for homeownership.
ABILITY TO PAY:
  • Income Level: must be stable, and supplementary income must be stable and likely to continue.
  • Savings: Family demonstrating the ability to save and budget money.
  • Rental Expense: Family paying market rent or willing to demonstrate the ability to pay market rent.
  • Delinquent debt: Must meet Habitat guidelines for debt in bad standing: past due, charged off, collections, judgments, and repossessions. All delinquent debt must be paid before lot selection.
  • Medical debt: You may have up to $10,000 in medical debt at the time you apply and and later close on your house.
  • Outstanding debt: Must meet Habitat guidelines.
  • Bankruptcy: May apply for a Habitat House two (2) years after bankruptcy has been discharged and good credit has been re-established.
  • Auto debt payments & other outstanding debt payments, along with other expenses, must be manageable within budget.

WILLINGNESS TO PARTNER:

  • History of timely payments, stable work history (1 full year at 1 place sometime in past
  • 3 years and be on current job for 6 months).
  • Maintains own household (live on own for 1 full year within the past 3 years).
  • No criminal record that poses likely future risk.
  • Sweat Equity: Understands and is willing to perform sweat-equity.
  • Commitment to the community.
